Berto stops Quintana in 8

By Sam Gregory: In the main event on the April 10th edition of HBO’s World Championship Boxing from Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida, undefeated Andre Berto 25-0 with 19 KO’s defends his WBC welterweight title against southpaw Carlos Quintana 27-2 with 21 KO’s in a scheduled 12 round bout in the welterweight division.

In the opening round of the fight both men came out throwing their jab testing their opponent; Berto was looking for opening using his lightening fast jab. Quintana moved back when Berto pushed forward not giving Berto an easy shot. Berto went down in this round that was ruled a slip; a replay showed it could have been ruled a knockdown for Quintana.

In round 2 Quintana landed a solid combination while Berto countered with a solid combination to the head. Berto landed a right to the body but Quintana took control of the round landing more punches; Quintana finished strong and won the round.

Round 3 Quintana gets warned for hitting behind the head. Berto lands a good solid left hook and pushed Quintana forward. Quintana lands a solid left hook. Berto landed two solid left hands. Berto landed a flurry of punches. Quintana had a point deducted for hitting behind the head.

Round 4 both men fought in the center of the ring and traded jabs. Quintana tied up and the ref separated the fighters. Berto was landing the more solid punches. Berto had Quintana against the ropes and landed several solid combinations to finish the round strong.

Round 5 both men came to the center of the ring and Quintana tied up, the ref separated them and Berto landed a strong combination to the body; Quintana countered, Berto landed hard combination and a slid right to the head that hurt Quintana. Quintana got his legs back quickly but Berto finished with a very solid round.

Round 6 both men traded solid shots to the head; Berto landed a solid combination to the body; Quintana tied up. Quintana dropped his right hand and Berto landed a solid left hand. Both men traded punches but Berto landed the harder punch. This was a very even round.

Round 7 Berto landed a solid combination to the body and head; Quintana had his back to the ropes and came out punching strong. Several times in this round the fighters tied up and were separated by the ref. Berto had Quintana against the ropes but Quintana rolled out without being hit solid. Berto landed one good right hand in that exchange.

Round 8 Quintana circled around Berto and landed his jab; Berto had Quintana against the ropes and landed several big shots. Blood was streaming down Quintana’s face. Berto landed a solid left to Quintana’s face and the ref stepped in and stopped the fight at 2:16 of round eight.

Andre Berto improves his unbeaten record to 26-0 with 20 KO’s; Quintana falls to 27-3 with 21 KO’s.
